2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this rise, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming looks particularly pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
