Alexander Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Clash

Preamble

The occupational hazards of tournament pool play mean by this stage of the ATP World Tour Finals fans frequently find themselves confused, searching around for a mathematical tool and trying to work out the complex permutations of qualification. But tonight’s match between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is simple. This is a winner-takes-all affair: the winner earns a semi-final battle against Carlos Alcaraz at this championship finale; the defeated player goes home.

Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the player with greater achievements, has claimed the title at this competition previously on two instances and leads their head-to-head six matches to three, having won both their past encounters on an covered hard surface.

But … this is the surface on which Felix has secured the bulk of his trophies, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on Wednesday and he defeated Zverev in the US Championships third round in August. Additionally, conditions are faster in Turin than at Flushing Meadows, which provides an additional advantage in Auger-Aliassime's favor.

If the German player is reserved, similar to his performance against the Italian, and Felix aggressively challenges the European player with his stinging serves and fearless play, it could well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the earlier standout who was once in line in front of Alcaraz and Sinner to replace the tennis icons – who earns the dubious honour of facing the top-ranked player on Saturday.

Play begins: at approximately 8:30 PM in Turin, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
