Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others got wounded in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled after the explosion was found soon after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts incurred by the three owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the blast had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
