Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he noted that any determination is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has emerged as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand the party's representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the power to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy stated, in the wake of a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in loss of life and casualties.

His administration noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was holding back additional funds from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," the governor's team said in a recent release countering the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted study revealed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters said that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of previous highs to current figures.

In previous months, Newsom stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
