Hazbin Hotel's Creator Reveals Alastor and Rosie's Origin Tale Is a Major Teaser for Season Three

Devoted fans of the show finally received a much-anticipated origin story in season 2's fourth episode, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark a lot of discussion and pose many questions about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears significantly stronger than any character previously realized. These fresh disclosures include a look into the human life of a fan-favorite character before his death and condemnation to the underworld.

In the episode, a flashback discloses that fan-favorite personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he made contact with the realm beyond in advance to secure a powerful role there. The charismatic leader, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his soul.

This raises an important query: How is this character sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?

“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, leading into the third season,” the creator states. “Clearly that is an excellent question: How is she so strong? The answer could be various factors, but the revelation is in season 3. I'm very excited for fans to see it.”

There’s no telling the duration the audience will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner frequently notes that animated production is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Nevertheless, she says holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of keeping the second season's attention where it belongs.

“The difficulty of any kind of deal with demons, or stories that have enigmas, is providing the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”

Mysteries Resolved in The Next Season

The showrunner assures that season 3 will tackle the questions fans have been asking, like why Rosie ordered Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.

“The whole seven years, and the deals these humans are making, and everything — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she reveals.

Meanwhile, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers a further look into how the core cast of Demonic Sinners looked like as mortals, following after viewing Sir Pentious’ historical human form in episode 2. The creator explains that significant consideration was put into these character designs.

“The mortal forms of these personas carry so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to looking very similar. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with something that represents the character, versus selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We opted for making a design that just felt like it was him.”

She says the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had long hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we believe the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we design the mortal forms of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and determine. I'm excited for people to see more of what the human forms look like.”

Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on midweek on the streaming service.
