Keith Baker along with Keith Baker Will Lead Workshops at Dungeon Master Academy

Beginning in 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been running immersive events where professional dungeon masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in Britain and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. These all-inclusive trips are especially popular among forever DMs who seldom have the chance to actually play themselves, and they often seek advice from the pros on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and crafting riddles to managing conflicts at the table.

In response, the organizers began developing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the establishment of DMU. The debut workshop is scheduled for early January 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“You can watch thousands of YouTube videos on almost every theme and acquire valuable insights, but the philosophy was that nothing truly replaces a live, hands-on session alongside other dungeon masters, where there’s live engagement with seasoned educators and other game masters often in a similar position and seek to enhance their abilities,” stated the dean of Dungeon Master University.

Course Offerings and Pricing Tiers

DMs can choose from options ranging from $995 to $2.5K, depending on the level of access they desire with the instructors. The starting package includes one of four courses:

  • Skill Building: Covers the essentials of leading a game.
  • Story Arc Development: Focuses around crafting long-running games.
  • Worldbuilding: Emphasizes the crafting of environments.
  • Industry Advancement: Designed for game masters who seek to understand more about the roleplaying business.

All workshops includes two days of training divided across a weekend.

“The classes are created so that you leave with tangible results, probably greater confidence, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they’re not just static videos. These workshops that you can participate in, learn from, and then return to your group the following week and put into practice in your local game.”

Seasoned Educators

Most classes are instructed by duo of instructors. Worldbuilding is led by the founder of Monte Cook Games and a renowned campaign designer, together instructing the skill of universe design.

Professional development includes multiple instructors, such as a puzzle design specialist, an entertainment professional, and a pioneering DM. The expanded teaching staff is designed to offer targeted guidance to students with definite objectives.

“Certain participants want to launch their own D&D actual play and present their narratives with the world, others aim to release and write original content,” Carl explained. “Some just want to ask, How do I get to be a DM at a program like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Higher Tiers

A $1.5K premium package offers access to a welcome reception, a welcome gift pack, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with an instructor. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the team has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their castle events.

“You could almost run an complete event just on consultation sessions for career game masters,” Carl mentioned. “I don’t know if that’s the best use of everybody’s time – In my opinion the coursework and the practical exercises is too valuable – but I think it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”

The $2,500 premium option provides an 60-minute private session and the opportunity to manage an adventure for several participants plus a teacher, who will then offer feedback and coaching.

“The aim is for the faculty member to review whichever aspect is focused on: Hey I don’t do well with improv or I get blocked in this kind of combat situation. May I present a scenario for you and receive input on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl explained. “Perhaps they want to get feedback and information on a particular setting that they’ve been developing.”

Future Plans

Input from the debut workshop will help guide future Dungeon Master University sessions. Carl said that potential adjustments could include adding more office hours, making it longer to 72 hours, or testing different seminar structures.

“I anticipate that we do this very often,” Carl expressed. “I really want to see numerous academy events in a given year, in multiple places, and in multiple countries. The response has been really terrific. We're extremely satisfied with what we’re seeing and I think it would be amazing to be able to conduct this in collaboration with major events.”
