The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Decry a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Publisher Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Prison Term.

The court decision of political dissident Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have labeled the legal verdicts driven by politics.

International Outcry and Demands for Freedom

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the two-decade sentence amounts to a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She labeled the legal case as having political underpinnings under a law aimed at quieting those who speak out against China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and release him to his family.

“This outcome illustrates how the ambiguous and wide-ranging stipulations of Hong Kong’s legal framework may be enforced in contravention of universal rights standards,” stated top UN human rights official Volker Türk.

A representative for the European Union, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deeply regrets” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his swift liberation without preconditions.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was taken into custody four years ago the enactment of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing following months of pro-democracy protests backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was ultimately convicted on charges including plotting to create inflammatory publications and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were pursuant to the controversial security law.

A Son’s Anguish

His son, Sebastien Lai, shared that his father fears dying alone without seeing his family again. The legal team labeled him the “planet's most prominent political prisoner” in custody today.

Sebastien Lai noted that while the outcome was foreseen, its confirmation was more painful than imagined, even as it offered some “solace” that the legal proceedings had concluded.

Diplomatic Fallout

This ruling has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. British leader Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in talks with President Xi Jinping recently. Nevertheless, the extent of progress towards his release is not known.

Sebastien Lai questioned the point of a visa-free travel agreement while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “a bit tone deaf.”

Government Reactions

In contrast, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee stated the ruling demonstrated that “law and order is maintained.”

The mouthpiece of China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, called Lai the “mastermind” behind previous protests and asserted the legal case had been “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries to avoid meddling in the nation's domestic matters.

A Defining Moment

Organizations like Reporters Without Borders called Lai as a icon for declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. The organization's director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who value a liberty of the press.”

Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting charges under the security law, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the strictest yet handed down under the controversial legislation.
