UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
