In a inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
